Nerissa Walkup
I feel like it can be difficult to find people, or even a therapist, who isn't quick to just minimize or dismiss your concerns. Or maybe you have well-meaning people in your life who are quick to give that classic "three steps to cure depression" list. Well, this is where my group in Inner City is different. It's a place where everyone can feel like they belong, a place where you can feel like your experiences are validated.
My name is Narissa Walker, and I use she/her pronouns. I'm a licensed professional counselor. I use a variety of different treatment methods, like ACT, which helps us accept difficulties and choose a path forward that is most in alignment with our values and our goals; DBT, which gives us tools to regulate and tolerate our emotions; and even some expressive arts, where we utilize different creative methods, like music, imagery, or poetry, to help us process and make sense of our experiences.
My group is full of energy, and despite still being therapy, we do try to have fun and laugh when we can. And while I can't guarantee all problems will be resolved by the time you're done with the program, I do believe that you'll feel better and you'll be better equipped to manage the challenges you face.
It's a courageous step to pursue this kind of treatment, and honestly, I commend you for coming this far. I'd invite you into this group space. I fully believe in it, and I believe it's a step worth taking. I hope we get to work together sometime soon.
